Há duas décadas, ocorreu uma das maiores demonstrações de como o esporte pode convergir interesses divergentes e unir uma nação esfacelada. Em 1995, a Copa do Mundo de Rugby foi realizada na África do Sul, um ano depois de Nelson Mandela assumir o governo com o fim do apartheid, que se estendeu por 50 longos e sangrentos anos.
Assistindo na ESPN o emocionante “30 for 30: The 16th Man”, documentário de 2010 dirigido por Clifford Bestall e produzido por Morgan Freeman e Lori McCreary, me dei conta de que tudo isso aconteceu há apenas 20 anos.
Hoje vendo o Campeonato Mundial de Rugby que acontece no estádio de Twickenham (Londres), dá pra ter a dimensão do quão incrível foi aquele jogo histórico, que uniu pela primeira vez a África do Sul, com uma população dividida torcendo pelo país e seu time (historicamente formado apenas por brancos), contra a favorita Nova Zelândia e seus gigantes, com os sul-africanos vencendo contra todas as previsões e expectativas.
Esse jogo e seus bastidores também foram tema do filme “Invictus” (2009), com o mesmo Morgan Freeman no papel de Mandela e Matt Dammon interpretando o capitão do time Francois Pienaar.
O filme de Clint Eastwood é bom, mas a carga dramática do documentário com cenas e personagens verídicos, é imbatível. A emoção dos depoimentos é visível, tanto por parte dos jogadores do South African Springboks, que narram como o jogo mudou a vida deles (a visita de Mandela antes da partida foi um choque para os jogadores) quanto a dos militantes negros que combateram o regime segregacionista e viam no time de rugby a personificação de seus opositores e algozes. Para muitos, a concepção de que a África do Sul era e é um país multirracial se deve sim a Nelson Mandela e àquela partida emblemática, que representou o nascimento de uma nova nação, nação esta que tenta curar suas chagas sem esquecer ou apagar o passado.
O resultado daquele jogo fantástico foi o inédito título do torneio para os sul-africanos. Antes disso, a equipe era proibida de participar da competições devido ao boicote internacional ao regime do apartheid. E logo na primeira participação, com o fim do boicote, jogando em casa e com o apoio de todos, a África do Sul venceu a grande favorita, Nova Zelândia, na prorrogação por 15 a 12 e levantou o troféu. O time da Nova Zelândia, o All Blacks era considerado o melhor do mundo e abrigava o gigante Joah Lomu, que, apesar da estatura, possuía uma velocidade incomum. Mas nem ele evitou a emocionante partida que acabou empatada e teve que ir para a prorrogação, com vitória dos azarões.
Mandela viu em um dos esportes mais praticados no país a grande oportunidade de unir a nação pelo mesmo objetivo. E usou a própria seleção do país para isso. O presidente, inclusive, sempre acreditou no esporte como uma forma de unir as pessoas e participou de outras importantes conquistas da África do Sul.
“Aquele foi o dia mais feliz da vida política de Mandela porque ali todos os seus sonhos se tornaram realidade. E foi o dia mais feliz na história da África do Sul. Há uma África do Sul antes deste jogo e outra depois do jogo”, disse o jornalista John Carlin, autor do livro “Playing the enemy” (Invictus – O Triunfo de Nelson Mandela), ao analisar o período de transição entre a libertação de Mandela e o início da sua presidência, e que inspira o filme de Clint Eastwood.
“O esporte tem o poder de mudar o mundo. Tem o poder de inspirar, tem o poder de unir as pessoas de um jeito que poucas coisas conseguem”, dizia Mandela.
Em andamento, a Copa de 2015 prossegue até outubro. Após serem definidos os oito classificados da Copa do Mundo de Rugby, as oitavas de final terão início no dia 17 de outubro. A grande final acontecerá no dia 31, com Twickenham novamente sendo o palco derradeiro.
O esporte pode criar esperança onde antes havia desespero, dizia Mandela. Ele estava certo.
